Find More Of Food Gal

Today marks my debut column in the weekly Metro newspaper, which serves the South Bay/Peninsula. It’s called, appropriately enough, “A Girl’s Gotta Eat.” (Like the caricature?). It will appear on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in Metro. I hope you’ll join me each month as I explore the interesting and scrumptious world of food.

You also can find out why a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant in Sunnyvale holds a special place in my heart. “Words Without Borders,” an online magazine for international literature, graciously asked food bloggers around the world to write stories this month to spotlight the connection between food and culture. You can read my contribution here.

  • Glad to see that you’re back in a newspaper! Will be on the lookout for your column.

I googled for Asia Village in Sunnyvale, and it looks like it’s on Wolfe Rd, maybe in the Safeway shopping center near Reed? I don’t see an address in the article(?) Goodness, I don’t live too far from there and I’ve never tried it. Will have to go. Do you think I’ll be at a disadvantage if I don’t speak Chinese, let alone read the kanji of the daily special menu? I love living in an area with the best Chinese restaurants, but it’s so intimidating if you don’t speak the language!

  • Thank you, Rena! It DOES feel nice to be back in a newspaper on a regular basis, and such a fun one at that.

You hit it on the nose. Asia Village is in a strip shopping center at 747 S. Wolfe Road in Sunnyvale. And hey, you’re at no more of a disadvantage than I am, since I can’t speak Chinese, either. If the waiter is not too busy, he will usually be nice enough to translate the specials listed on the white-board. You should definitely try the fried pumpkin (kabocha squash) and the fried eggplant. Both are exceptional. And they are only listed on the white-board. There’s often a steamed whole fish, too, as a daily special.

    Hope you enjoy it! 😉

  • Carolyn–Great blog start! I’m looking forward to following “Food Gal’s” culinary recommendations!

Excellent. More chances for us to read Carolyn Jung articles! Love the new “Girls Gotta Eat” column in the Metro. And really excited to hear about Asia Village. I, too, live close to there. I’m excited to try it. I love the hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They are usually delish!!

    Rock on, Carolyn!!!

    Hi Carolyn,

I’m so happy about your new “Girl’s Gotta Eat” column in the Metro! The more places I can read your food writings, the better. I’m going to take our crew out for a little “R&D” to Asia Village. Hole-in-the-wall restaurants are the best!

  • So glad you’re back in print! I’ll have to make sure I grab a Metro when you are in it.
And absolutely, we’ll go check out Asia Village!

  • Another reason why Metro is becoming my favorite newspaper!
