New Dessert Shop, New Kids’ Menu, New Wine

There’s a chill in the air in San Francisco — in more ways than one.
Chill is a new dessert cafe, 125 Kearny St. in downtown San Francisco across the street from the Crocker Galleria. Owner Trang Nguyen, who sports an MBA and work experience at Kraft Foods and Revlon, serves up unique sweets with global influences.
Low-fat, all-natural frozen yogurt comes in flavors such as original tart, black sesame, and rooibos red tea. There’s also vanilla frozen custard to give you goose bumps. Choose from toppings such as chocolate agave, black sugar, and dulce de leche.
Or enjoy those offerings in concoctions such as Black Sesame Fig ($5.25), a mix of fig puree, grape syrup, organic condensed milk, and black sesame fro-yo, all on a bed of shave ice. Or have it all stuffed in a crispy crepe cone. How about Banana Walnuts ($5.75), a crepe cone filled with banana chips, walnuts, dulce de leche syrup, and frozen yogurt?
The younger set is sure to dine happily at Yankee Pier restaurants in the Bay Area and LarkCreekSteak in San Francisco with their new kids’ menu. Kids can enjoy a classic PB&J on whole wheat ($4.50) or house-ground chuck burger with fries ($6.95) at Yankee Pier; and grilled fish & chips ($8.95), or macaroni & cheese ($5.95) at LarkCreekSteak.
Those 21 and older should head to the “Red Party,” Nov. 20-22, at Left Bank Brasserie in San Jose’s Santana Row. The restaurant will be transformed into a Parisian nightclub to celebrate the release of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau.
Oooh la la — red-clad go-go dancers will shimmy atop the zinc bar. If you get hungry while enjoying the entertainment and sipping the wine, Executive Chef David Bastide will be offering special dishes just for the occasion, each named after a 1960s French musical artist. Look for “Francois Hardy” (escargots in garlic butter with Pernod), and “Sylvie Vartan” (house-made boudin blanc with apples and gratin potatoes).
