Majestic Macarons and Other Super Sweets

San Francisco’s delightful little bakery, Miette, is getting a whole lot bigger.

The bakery, which sells all manner of lovely cupcakes, homemade candies, princess cakes, banana cream tarts, and yes, fabulous little melt-in-your-mouth macarons, has opened a third location, 2109 Chestnut St. in San Francisco.

The new spot, Miette Patisserie & Confiserie, is the bakery’s flagship location. It combines the best of the other two San Francisco locations: the Ferry Building pastry shop and Miette Confiserie, 449 Octavia St., which sells candy from all over the world, and spins cotton candy to order with organic infused sugars of lavender or grapefruit.

Miette’s is the brainchild of self-taught baker, Megan Ray, who named the business after the French word for “little crumb.” Make a visit, and you’re sure to savor every little last one.

  • They look so pretty in their glass jars!

    Cheers,

    Rosa

  • Your picture looks gorgeous. I fell in love with Miette when I was in San Francisco in September and took tons of pictures, though none were as gorgeous as yours. You have a great sense of placement in your photos.

  • Lavender cotton candy? Yes please! Also loving those jars…no ordinary cookie jars there!

Someday I have to get out to the west coast and let my stomach lead me around for a while. This will be one of the first places it leads me, I’m sure.

  • I will definitely stop there next time I’m in SF. (Now I’m tempted to go to all locations!)

Rosa – I have a set of those jars – got them at Target!

  • Ooh, Stephanie would like this place most likely. She likes macaroons. : )

  • I always stop there when I go to SF Ferry Building just to get the pistachio macarons! They are to die for good.

  • Kelly, I wish I could take credit for that amazing photo above. But if you put your cursor on it, you’ll see it’s actually by the wonderful photographer, Frankie Frankeny. Most times, if you put your cursor on a photo on my blog and there is no photo credit, that means yours truly took it.

Annie, I hear ya on the pistachio macarons. They are addicting. I like Miette’s cupcakes, too. So dainty and sweet looking.

  • Mmm mmm macarons. The minis are best. You can taste all the flavors that way.

  • Shoot, I love macaroons. I was in New York City last week and saw mounds of them at my favorite bakery. I HATE living in the country mostly because of my lack of access to macaroons. (I LOVE it for the sheer peace that going to sleep without streetlights and traffic noise affords.)

  • So, if we make some of your yummy holiday almond cookies in sort of a flat version, and then smoosh some filling in between a couple we’d be right up there with the best of em, eh?

Looks like you picked up a lot more commenters while I was out of town, Carolyn — I’m gonna have to get my game on here again 🙂

  • Well, I was about to send a message about a typo but now I see a macaron is not a macaroon! I didn’t know that. Wikipedia exexplains:

“Dating back to the 18th century, the macaron is a traditional French pastry, made of egg whites, almond powder, icing sugar and sugar. This sweet pastry came out of the French courts’ baker’s oven as round meringue-like domes with a flat base.

“Macarons are not to be confused with macaroons. Macarons are sandwich-like pastries made with two thin cookies and a cream or ganache between the cookies. Macaroons are dense cookies made with coconut.”

    Oh.

  • Moe, no worries. I once got the two spellings confused, too. But now that I am addicted to macarons, the spelling comes sweet and easy.

  • Ooh! I went to this store when I was in San Francisco almost 2 years ago. LOVED the little treats 🙂

  • Are the macarons at Clement just as expensive as the Ferry Building ones?

  • Miette used to be my favorite lunchtime walk destination when I was working by the Ferry Building, it’s such a delicious little spot. I would always go back to work with a little bag of macarons or one of their luscious ginger cupcakes. Mmm. You’ve captured Miette’s yumminess in your photo!

  • does look like SF is foodie heaven! your pictures are amazing! I will definitely check this bakery out if I’m in town – thanks!

  • Alas the cotton candy machine on Octavia is more often broken than working, but it’s a real treat when it does. I love the Rose Petal cotton candy – the kids like getting that treat after they play on the cool play structure outside. Also their fleur de sel caramels are really good.
