Free Scoop Day

Drop by any participating Haagen-Dazs store, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 12, for a free scoop of any “bee-built” flavor.

Don’t worry, that’s not ice cream with bees mixed into it. Rather, it’s ice cream flavors made with ingredients that bees help pollinate.

As you may know, one in three bee colonies in the United States has mysteriously vanished over the past few years. Bees are essential to our food supply, as they are responsible for pollinating one-third of it.

Haagen-Dazs has partnered with Penn State to help further the research the university is doing into this crisis. In 2008, the gourmet ice cream company donated $150,000 to the university. This year, it will provide a $125,000 gift.

The free scoop-promotion is a way to raise awareness about the honey bee problem. To find a  participating Haagen-Dazs near you, click here.

  • Woo-hoo! I’m already planning my day around this – how can I pass up free ice cream?

  • My husband and I are Penn State alums, and indeed their mission in all things agricultural is noteworthy. So is their ice cream! They have a very famous “Creamery” which dishes up all sorts of innovative flavors made by ag students from milk produced by the university’s very own dairy cows — it’s extremely cool (no pun intended, but hey, I’ll take it.) This sounds like a natural partnership. Go Penn State, and go Haagen Dasz!

  • Oh my gawd! I missed going to college at a university that makes/sells its own ice cream?? Mmm, maybe it’s not too late to enroll in a master’s program there. Perhaps there’s a degree program for eating ice cream? That would be worth hitting the books for.

  • Holy Cow (Sheesh — here we are with the puns again! ) I just checked their website, and boy howdy has that place ever grown. It used to be just a little hole in the wall counter alongside a pretty dilapidated old dairy barn. Check out their current list of flavors at: http://www.creamery.psu.edu/flavors.htm Don’t know if you follow football, but our legendary Coach, Joe Paterno, started his career there while my husband and I were students (no need to do the math, Carolyn — trust me, it was a lonnnnng time ago!) One of the most popular flavors for years has been “Peachy Paterno”. My personal favorite used to be “Blue Moon” which I see they no longer make.

    (pause for some research)

OMG! Wikipedia tells me that flavor is available right up the pike at Rick’s in Palo Alto. Field trip anyone??

I tell ya, Carolyn — your blog is causing me to commit all kinds of dietary indiscretions!

  • oh yeah, I’ve heard about the movement to help save bees by haagen daaz. but sad to say I’m more interested in the free ice-cream. marking my calenday now!

  • I can not believe that the closest Häagen-Dazs store is about a 45 minute drive! I suppose ice cream is not a top priority in a state that is deep in winter for 6 months of the year. I had heard about the plight of the bumblebee (sorry – couldn’t help myself! I’m terrible).

Seriously, it is a situation that needs more attention; I can’t even wrap my mind around the possible repercussions on food production if the situation continues to worsen.

  • My preferred topping for weekend pancakes has become honey; gotta promote awareness and science in this FIELD!

  • You answered my question about bees being ground up and churned into ice cream. That would have been the anti-bee campaign! lol. But I’m really impressed with Haagen Daz’s efforts to call attention to a problem I probably would never have known about otherwise. I hate to admit it, but sometimes it just takes ice cream to perk up my ears. 🙂

  • The only stores close to us are in the Valley Fair or Oakridge Mall…neither which I plan to go near today 🙁 I’ll just have to stop at the store and buy one of their tubs of ice cream (not free but still helps the bees).
