New French Almond Cakes

If you’re already a fan of Alameda-based Donsuemor’s madeleines, you’re sure to go wild for its new French almond cakes.
These dainty little cakes with pretty fluted edges are tender, moist, with a fluffy texture, and a very pronounced yet refined almond flavor from almond flour and sliced almonds. I was lucky enough to try them recently when samples landed in my mail.
Almond paste fans like me won’t be able to resist these treats that are inspired by rich, almond-laced French financiers.
The company is named for founders Don and Susie Morris, who started baking madeleines in the 1970s and selling them out of their VW bus. Demand grew and grew. Today, the privately-owned company bakes a whopping 15,000 madeleines per hour.
The new French almond cakes are $17 for a box of 20 or $20 for a gift box of 16. Find them on the Donsuemor Web site.

Dear goodness! I thought at first (was certainly *hoping*!) that this was going to be a recipe post. I guess the purveyors of almond goodies are on to one of your weaknesses, eh Carolyn? They look delicious!

Wow, lovely. But gee, I wish they still sold them out of their VW bus. I’ll bet that made them even better!

I was very disappointed in these, I thought they were bland and not “almondy” enough.

I love almond paste. It was one of those flavors that grew on me over time. Not really a kid flavor, much like onions aren’t. I want these madeleines so much now! It’s also tempting me to buy a madeleine baking pan because I stop and stare at it every time I go to Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table. But I don’t have room to store another baking pan. Doh!
