Bakesale Betty Cookie Mix

Bakesale Betty's ginger molasses cookies to bake at home.

The good news is that you no longer have to brave the humongous lines if you want a Bakesale Betty ginger molasses cookie.

The bad news is that you still will if you want Betty’s famous fried chicken sandwich.

That’s because blue-wigged Betty, aka owner Allison Barakat, has now packaged her popular cookie in a mix that you can buy to make at home. The Ginger Molasses cookie mix is sold exclusively at Williams-Sonoma stores. It won’t be available on the store’s Web site until the fall, though.

The mix comes in an adorable white box tied with string to mimic a bakery box.

How cute are the boxes?

You add butter and an egg, as well as your own granulated sugar for sprinkling on top of the cookies before baking.

These cookies bake up big — one will cover your outstretched palm. They taste classic and old-fashioned with a spicy, malty warmth. The directions on the box say to form the dough into balls, which you “slightly flatten.” The emphasis should be on “slightly,” as these cookies spread quite a bit, so just press down enough on them so they don’t roll around on the cookie sheet. Be sure not to overbake them, either, as they will go from crisp edges and chewy center to teeth-cracking hard if they’re in the oven a minute too long. Although the directions say to bake for 18 to 20 minutes, I found that 17-18 minutes worked best in my gas oven.

The mix is made with Australian crystalized ginger, molasses powder, cinnamon, allspice and malted barley flour. Each cookie has 200 calories.

Each $16 box makes 12 cookies. At the two Bakesale Betty bakery locations in Oakland, the cookies are $1.25 each. Do the math and figure that the mix will cost you $1 more to bake a dozen cookies yourself at home rather than to buy them already made at the bakery. No doubt, though, you’d have to wait in a long line at that bakery to do so. Plus, you’d end up spending even more, as you’d never be able to resist ordering one of those crunch-a-licious fried chicken sandwiches while you were there.

  • You’ve made me curious! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Yum. I’ve never heard of these cookies before so I love you for bringing this to my attention, though I think the cost thing is a funny one. I get the convenience of not having to wait in line but paying more to bake them yourself seems odd.

  • I’ve been eager to try the sandwich but I had no idea there were incredible cookies to go along with it! Even better.

  • While I rarely purchase pre-made cookie mix, this one I might have to try!!

  • Oh, do you know if they’re going to make a mix for their scones!? I love them, and always have to stand in that long line of fried chicken eaters just to buy one little scone (well, their scones aren’t that little, which is why I love them). So if they had a scone mix, then I can skip the lines. Please put in my request. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Bakesale Betty is a place that’s been on my list for ages to try, and alas, I doubt I’ll get there anytime soon.

Williams Sonoma on the other hand, I go into anytime I’m at the mall! I’ll have to check this out (since I must go get Star Wars sandwich cutters in the near future LOL).

  • Single Guy Ben: Let’s hope that if the gingersnap cookie mix does well that it’ll spark more Bakesale Betty mixes. I haven’t tried the scones, but they must be really something special if you brave the lines for them.

Mrs.L: You better take pics of those Star Wars sammies, when you make them. We all want to see ’em.

  • Might be a solution for a non-baker like me.

  • Oh my, I think I’m a long lost member of Betty’s tribe as I haven’t stopped drooling since the first paragraph ๐Ÿ˜› PS and yay Australian sugar! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • I’ve been trying to ease my boyfriend into baking -I’m thinking this is the way. Thanks!

  • Whoa these sound delicious! I think Williams Sonoma and I have a date with destiny (don’t we always?)

  • A great short-cut to a delicious cookie! I really like the mixes sold at Williams Sonoma in general.

  • I am going to go to Bakesale Betty for that chicken in the next 3 months if it kills me!

  • these sounds amazing and delicious. Awesome photography too!

  • so did the cookies ever sell at Williams Sonoma because they are not there currently 6/2015 and I really want them!

  • Kelley: Unfortunately, those mixes are no longer being sold. Williams-Sonoma has partnered with many chefs over the years to sell baking mixes, packaged meat rubs and jarred sauces. But many of those end up being discontinued after a year or so. Sorry about that!
