My family has always made homemade sauce for pasta, and the sauce is flavored with an assortment of meats--pork chops, sausages, meatballs, and braciola. I was pounding out thin strips of beef for the braciola when I realized that I was out of raisins (traditional for our Southern Italian recipe). Since the dish is so simple, they're really integral to the dish. Luckily, we had a box of a nut-covered raisin cereal in the cupboard, and I picked through for enough raisins to complete the braciola rolls. It made the rolls a bit sweeter than usual, but it was a darn tasty substitution!

This is probably kind of a silly one but a few weeks ago, I was planning on baking a rubix cube shaped cake for my roommate's birthday. When I went to turn the cake layers out of their pans, they all broke! I immediately panicked but decided to make mini cake pop-esque rubix cubes out of them!

I met my husband on our first day of law school, when he moved in across the hall from me in the law school dormitory. Unfortunately for both of us, his birthday landed smack in the middle of our first set of finals. I couldn't ignore the day, but I had neither the time nor the kitchen space to put together a big birthday dinner.
I spent a lot of time trying to think of how I could make his birthday special despite the stress we were both feeling. Using my noodle, I decided that if I could get access to an on-campus kitchen, I could bake a cake. I asked one of the chefs at the nearest cafeteria if I could use a bit of kitchen space to bake a cake from scratch (my first cake ever not from a mix!) On my now husband's birthday I snuck out of the dorms, used the kitchen to bake him a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, all from scratch. It was a little lopsided, but I knew he appreciated the effort. On the day he proposed to me, he said that he knew I was "The One" the day I presented him with that birthday cake. Now, every birthday is celebrated with a version of that chocolate cake. And yes, we both still managed to pass all of our classes.
