New Whole Grain Pasta and A Food Gal Giveaway

We all know we should be including more whole grains in our diet for added fiber and nutrients.

Golden Grain just made that easier to do with the launch of its new 100% Whole Grain Pasta. This is one case where you won’t need a science degree to figure out the ingredients list on the back of each box, either. There’s just one ingredient: durum whole wheat flour.

The Whole Grain Pasta comes in four varieties: angel hair, spaghetti, penne and elbow macaroni.

Contest: One lucky Food Gal reader not only will win four boxes of the 100% Whole Grain Pasta (one of each type), but also a Cuisinart Chef’s Classic stainless steel four-piece, 12-quart pasta/steamer set.

Entries for the contest, open only to those in the continental United States, will be accepted through midnight PST June 4. Winner will be announced June 6.

How to win?

Just tell me about a time when you really used your noodle, so to speak, to solve a problem or sticky situation. Best answer wins.

Here’s my own answer to that question:

“OK, this is really an example of my husband using his noodle, since he’s much more clever than I am. Years ago, when he and a colleague were on a business trip in Charlotte, NC, Hurricane Hugo hit. Power was lost, and folks were raiding the stores for supplies. My husband and his colleague ventured out to try to buy candles, since all the flashlights and lanterns already had been snapped up. The only thing they could find — believe it or not — were birthday candles. So, they snapped up those big numeral candles, thinking they had saved the day.  Only when they got back to their hotel did they realize that the wicks in these candles were nearly non-existent. After all, they’re meant to burn only long enough for the ‘Happy Birthday’ song to be sung.  So, using a lighter, they ended up melting down the birthday candles to make their own candles with some string they turned into much more workable wicks. I think McGyver would have been proud, don’t you?”

Winner of Last Week’s Contest: In the previous Food Gal contest, I asked you to tell me about a food, which when you see it, you just can’t resist — and why. The winner will receive a $125 gift card for Anderson Seafoods, Inc.

A huge congrats to:

Kay T, who wrote, “Big, blue succulent crabs from the bayous of Louisiana. As a kid my father and I would head for the bayous-he with a fishing pole and me with my crab bait and net, along with my 5 yrs. old niece who really just wanted to sit in the lawn chair and eat Ding Dongs and chips – a care package prepared by my mother. We would spend hours catching crabs and putting them in a big cooler, then once home my dad would clean the crabs and my mother would make the most amazing, spicy Cajun crab stew which she served over steaming white rice. Heaven on earth and a family affair. First you catch and clean the crabs, then as we say in Louisiana – you make a roux. Tres bien.”
