Baker & Banker Chefs Visit Macy’s Union Square

Join husband and wife,  Executive Chef Jeff Banker and Pastry Chef Lori Baker, when they demonstrate how to cook brunch favorites, 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at Macy’s Cellar Union Square in San Francisco.

Co-proprietors of Baker & Banker in San Francisco, they will be cooking up “French Toast Bread Pudding” and “Eggs in Purgatory.”

Best yet, this delicious event is free.

Asian Culinary Forum Event at the San Francisco Ferry Building

Four, young and dynamic Asian-American chefs will be talking about “Reinventing Asian Cuisine,” 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 22 at the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Panelists will be: Dennis Lee, chef and co-owner of Namu in San Francisco; Richie Nakano, chef and founder of Hapa Ramen in San Francisco; Sarah Dey, chef and manager of New Delhi in San Francisco; and Wilfred Pacio, founder of Spice Kit in San Francisco.

The moderator will be Thy Tran, founder and director of the Asian Culinary Forum, which is hosting this thought-provoking conversation.

Listen as the chefs talk about the challenges and rewards of trying to pay homage yet still put creative spins on traditional Asian cuisines. Then join in the conversation during the Q&A afterward.

A reception will precede with tastes from each of the featured restaurants, as well as Hodo Soy Beanery, Bex Winery and Momokawa Oregon Craft Sake.

Tickets are $35 each.

Dinner & A Movie — Indian-Style

Bread of India at Swan’s Market in Oakland, 948 Clay St., is kicking off a monthly series of film screenings accompanied by regional meals prepared by Chef Rohit Singh.

Get in on the fun with the first screening of “Cheeni Kum” (“Less Sugar”), a romantic comedy set in London and Delhi, on Aug. 25.

The menu will include chaat Ballimarin (made with potatoes, garbanzo beans, crispy wheat crackers and lentil dumplings with tangy chutneys); mughlai (goat) biriyani; fish tikka; romano beans and fingerling potatoes with grated coconut and cumin; and mango ice cream.

The four-course prix fixe will be served at 7 p.m., followed by the movie at 8:30 p.m. Price for dinner, movie and one glass of beer or wine is $40 per person.

On Sept. 22, the flick to be featured will be: “Today’s Special,” a foodie comedy directed by David Kaplan. A tandoori-themed menu will be featured.

Drowning Your Stock Market Sorrows

Who hasn’t needed a stiff drink these days, while watching the stock market tumble?

Credo restaurant in San Francisco understands.  Come for “Happy Hour” (2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) through the end of this month to receive $1 off any “Happy Hour” beverage for every 100-point Dow Jones loss from the previous day. There is a minimum charge of $1 per drink.

Also through August, the Top of the Mark lounge inside the InterContinental Mark Hopkins in San Francisco will feature a “Black Martini” for $10 on days the stock market goes up. Conversely, on days the stock market drops, a red grappa cocktail for $10 will be showcased at the InterContinental Hotel’s Bar 888 in San Francisco.

La Cocina San Francisco Street Food Festival

Head to San Francisco’s Mission District, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 20, for a most delicious time — the third annual La Cocina San Francisco Street Food Festival.

This block party on steroids will take place on Folsom St., from 22nd to 26th streets; and from 25th from Treat Street to Shotwell Street. Sixty vendors will be dishing up specialties, including Pizzeria Delfina, the Slanted Door, Roli Roti, Curry Up Now, and HapaSF. Half of the vendors, including Kika’s Treats, are part of La Cocina’s incubator program, which works with low-income and immigrant entrepreneurs to launch their own businesses. The festival is a fund-raiser to help the organization’s efforts.
