Chez Panisse Joins With Levi’s For A Special Event in San Francisco

Make a lunch date at 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24 at San Francisco’s tucked-away Maiden Lane (between Grant Avenue and Stockton Street) to enjoy locally sourced, organic box lunches from Chez Panisse and the launch of a cool new T-shirt collection by the iconic restaurant in collaboration with Levi’s.

It’s all to celebrate the 40th anniversary of  the landmark Berkeley restaurant.

Proceeds from the sale of the all-organic T’s will benefit the Edible Schoolyard Project, the organization that Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters established to integrate kitchen and garden education into grade-school curriculum. The T’s feature designs by such celebs as Waters, herself, as well as Sofia Coppola, David Byrne, Dave Eggers and Maira Kalman. Beginning Aug. 24, the shirts also will be available in select Levi’s stores around the country and online at Levi.com.

The suggested donation for each lunch box is $5, with proceeds going to the Edible Schoolyard.

Waters also will be on hand to sign copies of her new book, “40 Years of Chez Panisse, The Power and Gathering”“40 Years of Chez Panisse, The Power and Gathering” (Clarkson Potter).

Treasure Island Flea Market

On the last Saturday and Sunday of the month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., historic Treasure Island in San Francisco transforms into a bustling flea market complete with food vendors.

Visit the upcoming open-air marketplace, Aug. 27 and Aug. 28, to check out antiques, plants, flowers, indie designs and home decor specialties. Food vendors also will be on hand, selling everything from French galettes to pork belly BLTs to award-winning California wines.

Many of the vendors used to sell at brick-and-mortar stores until the economy tanked. The flea market gives them an opportunity to continue to sell their wares to customers hungry for unique items.

OysterFest at Waterbar in San Francisco

Celebrate the bivalve at the third annual OysterFest at Waterbar restaurant on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 27.

Enjoy unlimited oysters, Napa Valley wines, craft beers and live music — all for $40 per person. Tickets are available in advance here.

But wait, there’s more. What kind of OysterFest would be complete without a shucking contest, oyster eating contest and a hot sauce competition? Celeb judges for the events will include Olympic gold medalist, Brian Boitano; Liam Mayclem, host of “Eye on the Bay”; and KFOG personality, Renee Richardson.

Proceeds will benefit Surfrider Foundation, which is dedicated to the protection of the oceans and beaches. Last year, this event raised $11,000 for the foundation.

You can do just that at Urban Wine Uncorked, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25, at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Hall. The event is hosted by the Commonwealth Club of California.

Among the wineries that will be pouring will be Urban Legend Cellars, Rock Wall Wine Company, and Eno Wines.

Tickets are $22 for general admission; $12 for members of the Commonwealth Club; $7 for students with a valid ID.
