Village Pub’s New Sunday Suppers, Chef Marcus Samuelsson To Visit the Bay Area & More

Summer Sunday Suppers at the Village Pub

Woodside’s Village Pub will offer special “Sunday Suppers” all through July.

The four-course Sunday dinners are $65 per person and available via Gilt City through Wednesday.

The dinner starts with butter-poached lobster lasagna with sweetbreads and white corn. That’s followed by a changing seasonal market-fresh course, then seared duck breast with Sauternes-poached peaches. The meal concludes with crepes flambe with roasted cherries and creme fraiche ice cream.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson to Visit the Bay Area

Meet Chef Marcus Samuelsson, acclaimed chef of Red Rooster in in Harlem and victor of “Top Chef Masters,” at a series of July events in the Bay Area to celebrate his new memoir, “Yes, Chef” (Random House).

Samuelsson’s path to cooking stardom was far from the norm. Orphaned in Ethiopia at age 3 after his mother died of tuberculosis, Samuelsson and his sister were adopted by a family in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was there in the kitchen alongside his adopted grandmother, Helga, that Samuelsson grew to love cooking.

The book recounts his culinary growth, including his earning a three-star rating from the New York Times while head chef at Aquavit. At the time, he was only 24 years old, the youngest chef to receive that coveted ranking.

Since then, he’s cooked at the first state dinner hosted by the Obamas in the White House, and opened the very popular Red Rooster and Ginny’s Supper Club (downstairs from Red Rooster).

He’ll be the guest chef at a special dinner at Camino restaurant in Oakland on July 11. The event kicks off with a 6 p.m. meet-and-greet with snacks and drinks, in which Samuelsson will sign copies of his book. That’s followed at 7 p.m. by a sit-down, three-course dinner inspired by his book. Tickets to this event are $85 per person.

July 12 at 12:30 p.m., Samuelsson will be the guest chef at a lunch hosted by Chef Traci des Jardins at her Jardiniere restaurant in San Francisco. Tickets are $110 per person.

At 6 p.m. July 12, Samuelsson will sign copies of his book at Book Passage at the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Manresa Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Los Gatos’ esteemed Manresa restaurant celebrates a decade with a blowout series of dinners, July11-15, featuring a host of culinary luminaries.

July 11, Chef Michael Cimarusti of Providence in Los Angeles will collaborate with Manresa Chef David Kinch on a multi-course menu all about the sea.

July 12, husband-and-wife chefs, John and Karen Shields, will work with Kinch on a creative “fruits and vegetables” menu. The couple, who met while working at Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago, will be opening a new restaurant together in Philadelphia later this year.

July 13, Chef Carlo Mirarchi of Roberta’s in Brooklyn will join with Kinch on a menu with the theme of “pasture, meat and forest.”

July 14 and July 15, some of the most talented chefs to ever work at Manresa will return to contribute a dish for a multi-course tasting menu. The “Cooking with Friends” dinners will mark the return of former Manresa Pastry Chef Belinda Leong (soon opening B Patisserie in San Francisco); former Chef de Cuisine and Pastry Chef John Paul Carmona (a partner at the 3 Mile Group); former Chef de Cuisines Jeremy Fox (chef at Paper or Plastik Cafe in Los Angeles) and James Syhabout (chef/owner of Commis and Hawker Fare, both in Oakland); and former Sous Chefs Charlie Parker (executive chef at Freddie Smalls in Los Angeles), Michael Gaines (chef de cuisine at Central Kitchen in San Francisco) and Monty Cattaneo (executive chef at Dio Deka in Los Gatos).

The July 11-July 13 dinners are each $175 per person. The July 14 and July 15 dinners are each $198 per person. For reservations, call (408) 354.433.
