Four Oldie But Goodie Flavors from Kettle Brand Chips, Plus a Food Gal Giveaway

Kettle Brand's Classic Cheddar Beer potato chips. Absolutely addicting.

Over the past three decades, Kettle Brand Potato Chips has come out with a whopping 40 inventive flavors — everything from Yogurt & Green Onion to Burgundy with Aged Cheddar to Roasted Red Pepper with Goat Cheese.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Salem, Ore. company has decided to bring back four favorite flavors for a limited time only: Red Chili, Jalapeno Jack, Salsa with Mesquite, and Cheddar Beer.

I had a chance to try samples recently. The Red Chili, introduced in 1982, was ahead of its time with is almost sriracha spicy-tangy flavor. The Jalapeno Jack, devised in 1989, has a creamy note, along with a grassy back note of heat. The Salsa with Mesquite, launched in 1999, actually has the smoky, tomato, lime and garlic flavors of a chunky salsa. And Cheddar Beer, created in 2005, tastes of pungent sharp cheese. Although I didn’t detect the beer as much, this flavor was my hands-down favorite; so much so that I had to keep my husband from inhaling the entire bag so that I could enjoy just a few more of those crisp, substantial, cheesy chips.

The revival of four classic flavors.

The classic flavors come in 5-ounce bags for $2.79 each. They are available in select stores or online at BuyKettleChips.com. The Jalapeno Jack and Red Chili flavors also will be available in 8.5-ounce bags for $3.49 in grocery stores later this fall.

Contest: One lucky Food Gal reader will win 8.5-ounce bags of each of the four classic, limited-edition Kettle Brand Potato Chips. Entries, limited to those in the continental United States, will be accepted through midnight PST July 28. Winner will be announced July 30.

How to win?

Few folks can eat just one potato chip. In that vein, tell me something you have a hard time stopping at just one. Best answer wins.

Here’s my own answer:

“Black shoes. When I started dating the man who would become my husband, I remember him peering into my closet, rolling his eyes, and remarking, ‘How many pairs of black shoes do you need?’ Uh, well, quite a few, actually. After all, they may all be black. But each pair is different. There are sandals. There are pumps. There are Mary Janes. There are boots. Some have high heels, some low heels. And they each have their place and occasion. No doubt, any woman reading this will totally understand. So, I rest my case.”

Last Week’s Contest Winner: In the previous Food Gal contest, I asked you to tell me what goal you’ve been chipping away at. The winner will receive four different bags of the new Granola Chips by Willamette Valley Granola Company.

Congrats to:

Linda, who wrote, “I have been ‘chipping’ away at living with less. Less of everything to simplify and make my life easier. I have a large shopping bag by my door that I try to fill and drop off at goodwill at least once a month. I’ve tackled cleaning out my closets (plural ! ), dressers, kitchen cabinets, linen closets, candle drawers, office supplies, shoe collection, scarf collection . . . some months I am on a roll and make more than one drop off; some months I ‘miss’ a drop off. I keep the cycle going as I still have lots of possessions that I do not use regularly; I just have to find the right time to part with them – and I will! I have many conversations with myself about this all the time . . . again, chipping away at having fewer ‘mes’ to have these conversations so that I can live more simply!”

  • Yes of course- you can’t have too many black shoes!

I have about 6 different kinds of soy sauces – sweet, dark, light, Korean (whatever that means), low sodium, and one specific for making soups (something about it being saltier?). Every time I run out of one, I must replace it immediately. It’s kind of ridiculous that I’m hoarding so many soy sauces in a small NYC apartment. But hey, you asked! 🙂

  • First of all I’m with you on the shoes. At times I think it’s a curse but thank goodness for the closet organizing companies, they understand women.

As for not being able to eat just one chip, this is solely a chip issue with me. Maybe it’s because I don’t eat them often or avoid them because I can’t stop. My downfall is with original Doritos. If I thought someone else might eat them I think I would hide them. The only time I have them around now is when I make my Mexican Casserole. Then my husband comes tip toeing around and I tell him NO there won’t be enough for the crust. Then when he’s not looking I snorf what’s leftover. If my belly gets full or I start feeling sick, then and only then do I tell him he can have what’s left.

I never do that with anything and I’m so embarrassed to share this. Thank goodness he doesn’t follow me or my blog or he’d find out. DON’T TELL HIM!

  • I can totally relate on your collection of black shoes! 😉

For me, what I can’t have just one is dinnerware, such as bowls, plates, mason jars, etc…they are basically props for my food blog. Over the years, I’ve been buying and collecting different colors, patterns, shapes of dinnerware. Most of them I have 1 or 2 each (yes, a typical food blogger’s cupboard looks like a mess with one of each bowl or plate and never a full set! LOL)

That sure makes a fun entertaining. My guests would never mistakenly took other’s plate or bowl in a party at my house! 😉

  • Juicy Couture Tracksuits! For some reason, I can’t get enough of them! I have them in pretty much every color and wearing them just puts a smile on my face. I’d wear them to work everyday if I could but unfortunately we’re not even allowed to wear jeans. 🙁

  • I almost wanted to buy the sampler pack at the Kettle website!! Then the next day, I bought the unsalted and honey djon Kettle chips at the store instead. I still wish to try those interesting flavors. And to tell you the boring truth, I cannot stop at just ONE potato chip!? What? One chip? You should know my weakness for chips by now. :p

  • Who could ever eat only one chip??

For me it’s cookies and fabric. I have a very difficult time eating only one cookie, especially if peanut butter and chocolate are involved. As for the fabric, I have stacks of boxes of fabric stored in the basement, in my studio, in the closet. Who has time to actually sew it all into something useful? Best just to go to the store and become enamored with some other swath of beauty…
