A Perfect Valentine’s Day Pairing, Dessert For Dinner, and More

Sure, I’m biased, but I do think that Eden Canyon Vineyards has come up with the perfect pairing for Valentine’s Day.
It’s a signed copy of my cookbook, “San Francisco Chef’s Table” (Lyons Press), along with a bottle of its 2010 “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon, which won a gold medal in the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
The $55.95 “Perfect Pair” gift set is just the ticket to set the mood. Uncork the wine, and cozy up to one another as you leaf through the book together to plan your next cooking adventure or the next Bay Area restaurant you most want to visit.
The winery, the only estate-owned Filipino-American one in the country, is in the Paso Robles Appellation. The wine is made by Danny Villamin and his daughter, Elaine Blackaby.
If you’ve visited Presidio Social Club in San Francisco, you know they make a mean retro cocktail.
Now, they’ve bottled two for you to enjoy easily at home.
Choose between the Barrel Aged Negroni made with gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari; or the Barrel Aged Reasons Rye, a blend of rye, punt e mes, Cointreau and orange bitters.
Each is packaged in a stylish bottle sealed with lipstick-red wax. Each $42 bottle serves four to six. Just pour over ice and enjoy.
“Dessert for Dinner”? That’s what I’m talking about.
Not only does it promise one very sweet time, but it’s a fund-raiser for a worthy cause.
Pastry Chef Andrea Correa of Parallel 37 in San Francisco has organized this Feb. 24 event with pastry chef friends, Cindy Falatic of the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco; Shawn Gawle of Saison in San Francisco; Joshua Meiseman of Commis and Box & Bells, both in Oakland; Stephanie Prida of Manresa in Los Gatos, and William Werner of Craftsman & Wolves in San Francisco.
Working with Parallel 37 Chef Michael Rotondo, they will be creating a six dessert courses with two savory intermezzos. Tickets are $125 per person with an optional $70 beverage pairing. It includes a reception beforehand with hors d’oeuvres by Rotondo and cocktails by Parallel 37’s mixologist Camber Lay. For reservations, call (415) 773-6168.
The event supports This Bar Saves Lives, an all-natural, non-GMO snack bar, whose manufacturer donates for every bar sold a life-saving meal packet to a child in need through a partnership with Save the Children. This Bar Saves Lives also has spearheaded This Dessert Saves Lives, a program in which restaurants in the United States are invited to create a unique dessert for their menus that features one of their deconstructed snack bars. For every dessert sold, This Bar Saves Lives will donate a packet of food to a hungry child.
Falatic of the Ritz-Carlton will introduce a dessert at the event, which will benefit This Desserts Saves Lives and be on the menu at least six months.
