They say good things come in small packages.
Zoe Capdevila and Bertrand Corp want you to know that so do tasty French treats that can be delivered to your front door (or to friends and family).
The couple, who both grew up in the South of France and are now based in Alameda, CA, started Bon Appetit Box nearly a year ago after studying business in Paris, and working in the Paris offices of Pepsi, Unilever, and L’Oreal.
The delivery service lets you choose a single or subscription service for their curated boxes full of authentic French-made foods. Each box is $75, though, there is a discount if you order a four- or six-month subscription.
Recently, I had a chance to try the “Paris Apéritif ” box. The jaunty red-and-white logo box arrived bearing jars of Perigord Duck Rillettes, Duck & Pork Pate with Orange, Extra Fine Gherkin Pickles, whole grain mustard, and jammy Sweet Onion Confit, as well as Salé de Reims (puff pastry crackers flavored with Parmesan and Emmental that were tasty, but many arrived crumbled), and Petit Toasts. Also included is info about the purveyors, such as how Rougie (makers of the rilletes and pate) was founded in 1875 in the Perigord region, but now makes its products in Canada.
I spread some of the chunky, rustic rilletes and pate on a tiny toast with a smear of thick, onion confit and mustard, and I felt like I was having my own makeshift Parisian picnic right in my own living room.
There are three other boxes to choose from: “Goûter” (with fleur de sel caramels, soft nougat bars, Figue Violette Jam, and other sweets); “French Breakfast” (with apricot jam, mini madeleines, chestnut spread and other morning treats); and “Provence Apéritif” (which includes black olive tapenade, artichoke pesto, and cheese sticks).
They make for a fun gift for anyone who appreciates a taste of France.
