Get ready for the sweetest demo ever when Pastry Chef Dries Delanghe of Alexander’s Patisserie in Mountain View joins me for a baking demo at Macy’s Valley Fair in Santa Clara, 6 p.m. June 14.

The Belgium-born, acclaimed pastry chef starting baking at the young age of 14. After graduating at the top of his class with a bachelor’s degree in pastry techniques from a program in Bruges, Delanghe moved to Paris to train with the legendary Pierre Herme.

He followed that up with a stint as pastry sous chef at Joel Robuchon’s Las Vegas restaurant, before being hired as the executive pastry chef of Alexander’s Patisserie when it opened its doors in 2014.

At the elegant Castro Street patisserie, Delanghe turns out an array of exquisite chocolates, macarons and pastries such as salted caramel kouign-amanns, raspberry croissants, hazelnut eclairs, and black forest mousse cakes.

A second Alexander’s Patisserie is set to open in Cupertino in July. That’s when Alexander’s Steakhouse will relocate from its current location at the old Vallco mall to the Main Street Cupertino Mall. The 12,500-square-foot restaurant will sport an Alexander’s Patisserie on site.

In honor of American Icons week at Macy’s, Delanghe will show off his take on strawberry shortcake. And yes, you’ll get a chance to taste his divine creation.

The free cooking demo will take place in the culinary kitchen on the main floor of Macy’s Men’s & Home store.

  • I still have to check out Alexander’s Patisserie! I had a taste of their goods at a fair and want to try more. (BTW, the Macy’s promo made me think Taylor Swift was going to perform at your demo. But you’re the rock star!)

  • Ben: That is hilarious! But you are right — the model in the ad does look like Taylor! Can you imagine the crowd we’d have at the demo if she WAS part of the demo? LOL
