Just what was it like to grow up the only child of the iconic chef who launched the California cuisine revolution? Singer, the founder of lifestyle brand Permanent Collection and holder of a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, answers that question and more in her memoir, “Always Home: A Daughter’s Recipes & Stories” (Knopf), which debuted last year.
Singer practically grew up in the kitchen of the world-famous restaurant, snuggled in an oversized pot or salad bowl, while her mother took care of business, overseeing the pristine produce from local farms that came through the doors that starred in simple yet stunning dishes each night. Summers were spent in France at wineries owned by friends and scouring farmers markets for impeccable finds. Why did Singer not become a chef, herself? And why did she originally turn down the opportunity to write a book like this? You’ll find out why.
