Farmers Markets’ Goodies You Must Try
Beyond the eye-catching fresh fruits and veggies at local farmers markets is a world of incredible eats that aren’t fresh produce.
Read about my top picks in my first installment on farmers markets treats in today’s “A Girl’s Gotta Eat” column in Metro. Part II will appear in that weekly newspaper on July 9.
I’m familiar with all of the vendors you mentioned in that article. I can vouch for the quality of the food of all but one: the oysters. We got sick soon after downing a dozen last year. It happens from time to time, I know. But now I’m kinda gun shy about going back to that vendor. I’d rather go to Hog Island Oysters at the Ferry Building Marketplace.
Oh no about the oysters! So sorry to hear that. It’s true, though, about oysters getting the best of us even at the toniest establishments. I do heartily agree with you about Hog Island Oysters at the Ferry Building. Without a doubt, they are the best oysters I’ve ever had. They are sooooo good and so amazingly sweet that they’re the only oysters I eat without any accompanying sauces. Why cover up perfection, right?
cool article, looks like I need to expand my farmers market radius!
Thanks for your great article about non-fresh produce offerings at farmers’ markets.
You did a fine job describing the products of three of our favorite non-ag. vendors at the Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market, Fabrique Delices, Cowgirl Creamery, and Oaxacan Foods. Hope lots of readers follow your lead and check us out on Saturdays mornings from 8 to 12. Our market has been around for over 25 years and we hope to continue for 25 years more.
I love the oysters there! I did get sick once but can’t pin it on the oysters for sure (though one is always quick to suspect them), and have had them many times without incident.
Today I had something new there — the seafood tostada. Wow!! A very generous mound of shrimp and fish, with a small amount of rice, on a tortilla. Delicious and a good deal for $5.
I just love the Farmers’ Market.
