Cookies To Nibble With Wines

Enjoy some cookies with that Chardonnay.

Sure, you’ve enjoyed wine with cheese, and wine with chocolate.

Now, get ready for wine with cookies.

Cookies & Corks are bite-size cookies made especially to pair with your favorite varietals. They’re made by CookieZen of Virginia, which was founded by Leah Kuo, who studied pastry at the Cooking & Hospitality Institute of Chicago; Laura Englander, who had a long career in sales and marketing for other companies; and Amy Reilly, a wine expert and cookbook writer.

Each box contains three different types of cookies, each made to pair with specific varietals.

For instance, the Red Wine Pairing Box includes: Espresso Chocolate Peanut Butter, Shortbread, and White Cheddar Rosemary cookies. The White Wine Pairing Box has Peanut Butter Chocolate, Ginger Molasses, and Apricot Sage cookies. And the Sparkling Wine Pairing Box contains Zesty Lemon, Sea Salt Chocolate Oatmeal, and Parmesan Thyme cookies.

The cookie pairing boxes come in three types.

I tried some of the white wine pairing cookies with a CalNaturale Chardonnay, a bright, non-oaky zingy wine that is the first Chardonnay made from organic California grapes to come in a convenient Tetra-Pak. And it has a wallet-friendly price of $6.99.

With its nuances of apple and pear, the Chardonnay amplified the fruitiness and buttery quality of the apricot sage cookies, which were designed to go with that wine varietl. It also played up the creaminess and richness of the peanut butter chocolate cookies.

Next, I opened a bottle of Phillips Hill 2007 Oppenlander Vineyard Pinot Noir from Mendocino.ร‚ย  The crumbly shortbread cookies rounded out some of the tannins in theร‚ย  fragrant floral wine that had hints of dark cherry. Taking a bite of the white cheddar rosemary cookie made me realize how the woodsy notes in the wine played so very well with the resiny herb.

Cookies & Corks are available at BevMo stores for about $7.95 a box.

The cookie boxes would be great to break out at a wine party or to give as a hostess gift. It’s a fun way to experience wine in a whole different way.
