They have the hard crackling crunch of miniature corn nuts. And a great roasty, toasty, nutty, and earthy taste.

Mighty Lil’ Lentils is a new plant-based snack made from lentils that are crisped up in safflower or sunflower oil, then salted and dusted with other flavorings.

It’s the newest product from Seapoint Farms, the California company that’s the largest importer and manufacturer in the United States of edamame.

The company is now turning its attention to lentils, the tiny legumes that are a good source of protein and fiber.

I had a chance recently to try samples of its four new flavors of Mighty Lil’ Lentils: Falafel, which is redolent of garlic, onion, and paprika, and carries a tickle of heat; Cinnamon Sugar, the only sweet variety, which tastes like cinnamon toast albeit with a slight vegetative edge; Pink Himalayan Salt, the simplest of the varieties, which brings the natural nuttiness of the lentils to the forefront; and my personal favorite, Barbecue, which is sweet and smoky, and tastes like barbecue potato chips.

The gluten-free lentils are delicious just eaten out of hand when you’re craving something crisp and salty. The savory ones can be a fun garnish for salads or grilled vegetables or even avocado toast. The Cinnamon Sugar one might make a delicious topping for oatmeal. The savory ones might work as a coating for chicken or fish before baking or shallow-frying, too.

One quarter cup has 150 calories, 5 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, and 6 percent of the daily recommended amount of iron.

A 3-pack (5 ounces each) is $13.36 on Amazon.
