Get Saucy — No Matter Your Dietary Restrictions

After being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2018, Brian Bentow went on a low-inflammation elimination diet and became symptom-free without the need for medication.

However, he began to miss certain favorite foods, especially ones with global flavors. So he joined with Chef Suhan Lee, a Marine veteran who went to culinary school after he developed IBS symptoms following antibiotic treatments when he was injured in Iraq.

Together, they have created Get Saucy, a ready-to-cook line of sauces made with organic and non-GMO ingredients. Free of the top nine allergens (milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame), Get Saucy follows in accordance with paleo, autoimmune protocol, low inflammation, and gluten-free diets.

While a number of sauces are in the pipeline, the first one to debut is Tikka Masala, which is available in a three-pack of 16-ounce jars on the Get Saucy website for $45. I had a chance to try a sample recently.

The sauce can be used as a marinade, dressing or dip. I used it as a simmer sauce, adding it to a pan of sauteed shrimp and asparagus.

It’s a very thick and creamy sauce right out of the jar, owing to coconut cream, red beet, butternut squash and carrot pureed into it, which also give it a slight sweetness. There’s tanginess from red wine vinear and tamarind, and warmth from clove, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric and curry leaf.

The ready-to-use Tikka Masala is the first of many products that Get Saucy is developing for those with dietary restrictions.

Although the jar states there are 8 servings per container, I think it’s more like 4, especially if you’re serving rice or bread alongside to sop it up. Each 1/4 cup serving has 80 calories with 5 grams of total fat (with 4.5 grams of that from saturated fat), 250 grams of sodium, 6 grams of total carbs, 1 gram of protein, and no cholesterol.

The sauce is mild with no chili peppers whatsoever in it, making it ideal for those who shy away from any spiciness. For me, though, I wish there had been at least a little pop of heat to give the sauce greater dimension. However, that’s easy enough to remedy by adding your chilies or a dash of your favorite hot sauce.
