Marin French Cheese Co. Celebrates 160 Years With New Products

America’s oldest cheese company, Marin French, marks its 160th anniversary this year in a big way — with new cheese offerings.
The West Marin company has expanded its “Breakfast Range,” its fresh brie that is rindless and not aged. I had the opportunity to try samples of the new products.
I’ve long been a fan of its Petit Breakfast ($7.99), its 4-ounce wheel that is soft, creamy, tangy yet mild that I often enjoy with jam on an English muffin for breakfast. So, I couldn’t be happier that it now comes in a size that’s twice as large.
The aptly named Big Breakfast proves that size matters. After all, it just gives you all that more to love — on crackers, alongside fresh or dried fruit, or melted in a sandwich or omelet. Plus, at $14.99, it actually costs less than two Petit ones, giving you more bang for the buck.

This particular cheese has a storied history: Founder Jefferson Thompson, who purchased the dairy ranch in West Marin, began making a type of bar cheese in 1865 using the liquid left after churning butter. With an influx of hungry miners and dock workers, an egg shortage occurred. So, Thompson created this fresh cheese as a morning protein alternative. It’s been a hit ever since.
Along with the Big Breakfast are two new 4-ounce petit fresh bries. First, Petit Breakfast Everything ($7.99), which as the name implies is made with the popular everything bagel seasoning. You definitely taste the onion and garlic. There’s also a subtle crunch from poppy seeds and nigella seeds. Pile slices on top of an everything bagel for double the pleasure, double the flavor. Or add it to most any sandwich for an instant boost.

Second, Petit Breakfast Chive ($7.99) with onions, shallots, and chives tastes like your favorite onion dip in cheese form. Enjoy it in a grilled cheese, garnishing a green salad, tossed into pasta salad or stuffed into a baked chicken breast.
The cheeses are available on the Marin French Cheese Co. site, as well as in stores such as Whole Foods, Safeway, Sprouts, Grocery Outlet, Bi-Rite Market, Mollie Stone’s, Andronico’s, and more. Selection may vary at each store.
Ooh, my favorites just got even better. Yum!
Hi Jhpisces: I couldn’t agree more. So glad you’re such a big fan of Marin French Cheese, too.
