Spiceology Broadens Your Kitchen Curriculum

They look like jars from a chemistry set. But have no fear; the only explosions these will set off are ones of thunderous flavor.
Get to know Spiceology, a Spokane company that sells more than 300 spice blends.
It was founded in 2013 by food blogger Heather Scholten and Chef Pete Taylor.
The spices are available in single jars of varying sizes or in select variety collections. I had a chance to try the latter when the company sent me a sample of its “Ultimate Rub Collection” ($64.95) that features 12 mini jars of its best-selling blends.
It includes some really creative ones such as Raspberry Chipotle, a mix of brown sugar, chipotle, raspberry, paprika, cumin, mustard, and salt that is sweet, woodsy, and has a good kick of heat.
I appreciate that each jar’s label includes suggestions on what to try it on. In this case, it’s: margaritas, brisket, salmon, pork loin, marshmallows, brownies, and more. For fun, I tried it sprinkled on top of a just-baked chocolate mochi donut. The fruity note married well with the chocolate, and the spicy hit dampened down the donut’s sweetness.

The Pink Peppercorn Lemon Thyme is a mix of black pepper, pink peppercorn, thyme, salt, dehydrated orange and lemon, sugar, garlic, onion, and turmeric. It added a nice floral, citrusy and peppery touch to salmon.
Black & Bleu incorporates actual blue cheese powder with paprika, garlic, onion and salt for a spicy, cheesy blend that is wonderful on popcorn and baked potatoes.

With chili pepper, brown sugar, salt, orange peel, cumin, and lime oil, the Chile Margarita packs a bold citrusy, earthy, and spicy punch that would make quick and delicious work of seasoning anything you want to wrap up in a taco or burrito.
The blends inspire you to play in the kitchen. They’re perfect for cooks of any ability and make for a thoughtful housewarming gift, too.
Spiceology blends are available on its website, as well as at Target and Walmart.
